Water Integrated Management in Murcia Region

Monday, July 1, 2013

“Integrated Water Management in Murcia Region. The study case of Campo de Cartagena” is a monograph published by IMIDA containing the delimitation of Campo de Cartagena, the water resources availability, the water infrastructures, water use & demand.

The book analises the future of crops related to the technological advances (application and evaluation of water needs, management of deficit irrigation, remote sensing and soilless culture technology), as well as various recommendations about drinking water supply in tariffs, management, financing, maintenance and conservation.

Murcia region optimizes the use of the scarce water volumes available, because it has modernized irrigation systems and integrated management of all water resources of their different sources: Tajo-Segura transfer, debugging, aquifers exploitation and desalination. It also has the most innovative techniques in sanitation, which cover almost the 99% of the population.

Regarding reuse of reclaimed water through purification, Murcia Region has the highest percentage of all Spanish peninsula, reaching the 30%, face up to national average with a percentage of 8%, and with numbers of reused water of 195 hm3/year in agriculture.

In recent years, Murcia region has been favored with the consolidation of drip and high frequency techniques of irrigation, which has been a major transformation of its irrigation, standing as the Spanish region with the highest irrigated surface by drip irrigation, reaching a 98% of Campo de Cartagena surface.

Salomón Montesinos participates as co-author of this publication thought their remote sensing works done for IMIDA since 2004.
